In 2017, HCF made one-year general operating grants to support community-based health and human services, with a particular focus on efforts that address the needs of the most socially and economically vulnerable community members. HCF grants are geographically restricted to initiatives and services that impact the residents of western Cook County Illinois.
General operating support grants funded up to 10% of an organization’s budget, and capital improvement grants are capped at $50,000. We received 158 requests for funding and were able to grant 115 of those requests. The focus of HCF grant making in 2017 is to provide organizational support to strengthen the interconnected web of health and human service organizations that have taken such a beating from the previous two years in Illinois without a State budget. Many of our service providers have tapped extended lines of credit, borrowing against enormous accounts payable owed by the State, in order to make payroll and keep the lights on. They are operating with skeletal staff and volunteers. These organizations are vital to the fabric of our communities and our 2017 grants are dedicated to supporting the sector through these tough times.
Beginning in 2018 HCF will be undertaking a strategic planning process. In this process we will ask our partners to help to identify issue areas and initiatives where our foundation can make strategic investments that will move the needle towards making our communities the healthiest in the nation. We will be sharing what we learn through our newsletter (sign up here) and inviting participation in our process.
Please check back here early summer of 2018 for new guidelines for our 2018 Grantmaking.
