07 Jan HCF Statement About Insurrection at US Capitol and Racist Act in Oak Park
Share This ArticleWe are saddened and outraged about the white supremacist violence that we, as a country, witnessed on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol. Amid feelings of anger and disbelief, we must hold on tightly to hope and light that exists in the darkness. As we persist in our battle against the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racism, let us continue to come together, as a community, to work towards justice and healing. But there is a lot of work to do.
We have seen how white violence has manifested, not only in the insurrection, but in the physical intimidation and destruction at the U.S. Capitol and within our region. On January 6th, racist vandalism occurred at a Black-owned business in Oak Park, a community within our region. We cannot tolerate these hateful actions and must work together to find and create paths for deep healing, reflection, and change. The Healthy Communities Foundation stands in solidarity with the Oak Park community during this moment.
As we approach Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we find comfort and energy in his words:
Let us fight passionately and unrelentingly for the goal of justice and peace.
May we build healthy communities together, strengthened by our hope and vision for the future we all seek.
